Social Superblocks

A spatial allocation method for Barcelona's home-care service that moved from neighbourhood demand to contiguous service zones, using the social-superblock model to connect urban form with how care is organised.

Barcelona's home-care service had to reconcile where support was needed with how teams could work across a continuous and practical territory. Administrative boundaries describe jurisdiction, but they do not necessarily produce coherent care areas at neighbourhood scale.

My contribution

For my double-master thesis and internship at BCNecologia, I devised a spatial allocation method for the Superilles Socials programme. The method used genetic algorithms to form contiguous social-superblock zones, then evaluated them against service demand, compactness and neighbourhood indicators. The research connected an urban-form proposition to the organisation of a municipal care service rather than treating the superblock only as a mobility intervention.
